Knowing a translation is a useful start, but a sentence shows how a word works in context. Try to recall the meaning before you check it, then notice how the word fits into the sentence.

1. Read the example in context
Look at a Spanish word in a short sentence. This helps you connect its meaning with the way it is used.
For example, cerca means “near” in “La estación está cerca del centro.” The sentence makes the relationship between the word and its meaning easier to see.
2. Try to remember before checking
Look at the Spanish word and think of its meaning before revealing the answer. Then check the translation and read the example again.
Mark words that are difficult so you can return to them in a later session.
3. Review at regular intervals
Instead of repeating a word several times in a row, try recalling it again after some time has passed. Return sooner to words you find difficult and later to the ones you remember easily.
Lernir’s flashcards let you mark whether you remembered a word or want to review it again.
4. Notice familiar words while reading
After practising with example sentences, read a Spanish story at a comfortable level. When you meet an unfamiliar word, first see whether the rest of the sentence gives you a clue.
Comprehension questions at the end help you check how well you followed the text.
