SPANISH READING GUIDE

Start reading Spanish with short stories.

You do not need to translate every word. Choose a story you can mostly follow, read in short sessions and use the surrounding sentence to work out unfamiliar words.

Choose a story you can follow

If you need to look up almost every word, try a shorter or easier story. A useful starting point is one where you can follow the main idea while still meeting some new vocabulary.

Choose based on how comfortably you can understand the text, then move to more challenging reading as your skills develop.

Read in short sessions

You do not have to finish a story in one sitting. Read a few paragraphs, pause to recall the main idea and continue when you are ready.

Short sessions can make it easier to keep reading regularly.

Do not stop at every unfamiliar word

First, try to infer the meaning from the rest of the sentence. Look up a word if it is important to understanding the story; otherwise, keep reading and come back to it later.

Seeing a word in more than one sentence can help you understand how it is used.

Answer questions after reading

When you finish, answer questions about the text to check what you understood. In Lernir, you can also open a word’s explanation while reading.
